Angular translucent wooden elements set the mood for an exhibition dedicated to innovation, by the EPFL’s Timber Construction Laboratory (IBOIS).

Project description:
“Humans, who have worked with wood in many different ways for millennia, continue to explore new possibilities today using fractal geometry and sophisticated software. A true high tech material, wood fuses like metal; it is bent and pleated, braided with suppleness and curved gently into ribbed shells in the expert hands of EPFL’s Timber Construction Laboratory (IBOIS), directed by Yves Weinand. The “Timber Project” exhibit presents current research in timber construction, where interdisciplinarity – in this case, between civil engineering, architecture, mathematics, and computer science – provides a breath of fresh air and a surge of new inspiration. This research, whose timing coincides with current environmental and ecological concerns, is leading to innovative construction solutions that can be efficiently built and are economically viable – a new architecture of wood.”
The translucent effect is achieved by CNC carving the wooden panels.

Whisper Cloud is an interactive installation meant to be projected on a large multi-touch screen, allowing direct interaction with the viewer.

The artwork questions our relationship to new digital technologies and the contradictions that sometimes occur. The dots are a flat, visual representation of the word “surface” in Braille. The pixilated mouth whispers heart-beat sounds, as a clock would tick the time away. Constant interaction is needed to keep what is “behind” visible and moving. Physicality plays with virtual reality and their combination results in a unified, dimensional experience.

A litteral approach is taken by exploring the spatial qualities of the model scale like packaging and suggesting a life size habitation / shelter module based on the same characteristics. This project was an entry at the Design It Shelter Competition, organized by the Guggenheim Museum and Google SketchUp.

More of these old Apple packagings wanted, in case you haven’t already discarded yours…

I am not aware of many blogs dedicated to exhibition design – at least the spatial aspect of it… but many about crossover disciplines that can influence and inspire an exhibition designer: architecture, interior design, landscape design, even industrial product design although at a different scale, set design in theater and fashion, graphic design in a 3-dimensional context… The list is long and this blog is about just that: glimpses at so many inspirations.

So exhibition design it is, and environments, experiences, art installations, interactions… the term I am tempted to use is spatial design, referring to anything really occupying & influencing a space – then it’s about the surrounding void too…

This blog is about celebrating this diversity through a contemporary eye.
